You must be in the soul-renewal
business! From our nature trail hike to feeding chickens
in the a.m., it has been wonderful! Thank you for
the opportunity to be present to nature at its finest.
… and the hot tub under the stars was fantastic.
–
Mary Ellen & Gene, Bellingham, Washington
Thanks for everything – the food, accommodations,
conversation and the massage were wonderful! I can
return to Tucson a renewed woman! I’ll be back
soon! – Liz, Tucson, Arizona
Thank you for providing such a wonderful place for
us to be able to spend uninterrupted time with our
son and daughter-in-law. We have traveled to many
places, in different parts of the world- and this
setting rivals any places we’ve seen. You are
lucky people to live here. We were very comfortable
in you B&B and hope to return.
P.S. – I want a yurt! – The Darbys
It’s great to be back in Arizona after 20 years
absence! Our stay at your fabulous B&B made the
return a success that will long be remembered. The
peace and serenity cannot be equaled anywhere in our
journeys. The breakfasts you served were outstanding
and so appropriate. Our hike on the Cochise Trail
took us back in time to the Apache era. The lunch
you made for us really hit the spot. We hope to return
again with friends. Thanks so much for the hospitality.
– Roger & Mary Lou, Beverly, Ohio
This has been for us the “find of the last many
years”! The combination of intimate canyon setting,
wildlife, summer rainstorms, gourmet breakfasts &
great hospitality has made for the perfect setting
to celebrate our 36th anniversary and renew our love.
And for the first time in many vacations, we barely
looked at our watches! If this wasn’t enough,
we fell in love with the straw bale house. (I spent
time pouring through the “Straw Bale House Book”).
Having designed and built our own house in the Tucson
foothills, we certainly identified with your wonderful
experiences. Now you have us thinking about building
a small getaway strawbale house somewhere in southern
AZ. We really appreciate your attention to energy
conservation, resource efficiency and in general,
your respect for our planet. We deeply share those
values and admire your ability to live them! I’m
sure you haven’t seen the last of us and we
will spread the word about Cochise Stronghold B&B
to colleagues & friends. All the best –
Dale & Paula, Tucson, Arizona
WOW!!! I am soooo pleased with this B&B that I
cannot find words to describe how amazed I am! All
of these words don’t come close put together.
Wonderful, awesome, amazing, stupendous, beautiful,
fun, outstanding, comfortable, heaven, peaceful, indescribable,
one-of-a-kind, fantastic, exceeds expectations, my
official favorite get away! Perfect. I travel a lot,
so I stay at a lot of different places! Countless
amounts of places! Your place is and always will be
my top favorite! I have never been soo pleased with
anything! I will definitely come back Even if it’s
the last thing I do….banked in memory forever…
– Pearl & Kyizom, Waterloo, Ontario,
Canada

This is a lovely, peaceful, relaxing place. We enjoyed
the petroglyphs & even saw a group of javelina!
Sorry we never met you, but Randy was a gracious host.
The scenic beauty here is amazing. The breakfasts
were delicious – especially the pancakes &
the apple butter was first rate (this from an eastern
Pennsylvanian who was raised on great apple butter).
Hope to come again soon. – Melissa &
Charlie, Tucson, Arizona
It takes brave souls to commit to living in this harsh
country, but the rewards are evident. Thank you for
a beautiful peaceful end to our short but much needed

in everything. We wish you the best, and will certainly
recommend your place to our traveling friends.

(Child’s handwriting)The teepee was so cool.
We were laughing the whole night long… This
was a great place to stay. We were so cuddled up in
this little room. This was probably the most cuddly
“hotel” we’ve ever stayed in. We
went to the Chiracahua Mountains and this was a great
place to come back and stay. – The Wood-
Isenbergs, Tucson, Arizona
This is one architect who thinks you’ve done
a fabulous job! Thanks for the inspiration to think
about how to “get off the grid”…
– NBK, Tucson, Arizona

when I need a spiritual/ mental rejuvenation. I now
will add walking on your land and looking back at
the mountains, especially the face that is there,
to my special list. Thank you so much for everything.
The book says it all but in a way it doesn’t
even begin to tell the story of what it means to be
here. Namaste. – Cindy & Stan, Chicago,
Illinois

Sight through the painted mountain backdrop;
Smell through the hand made goat milk soap;
Touch through the sheep skin thrown and divine bed
coverlets;
Sound through the birds songs and Enya.
Our souls were restored. We will have joyful memories

too. What more can you ask for? – Bill

I was lucky enough to discover your beautiful place
while doing a construction project for the Forest
Service with my partner, John .. last year. Since
then I’ve often thought of sneaking back here
with my wife Kristina for a getaway. I’m so
glad we could finally make this happen. Years ago
I spent much time in the Stronghold Rock climbing
and this trip brought back many of those memories.

meals, the friendship and conversation. Hope to be
back soon. – Holly & Erik, Tucson,
Arizona

longer stay. – Beth & David, Evantson,

this place has to offer. – Liza, Karin,
San Jose, California
Thank you for a most rejuvenating and peaceful stay.
My short time here has connected me a bit more to
nature and your home has even inspired this “city

our own straw bale house. You truly make your guests

With your welcoming demeanor and willingness for a
chat! The hot tub was fantastic as was our specially
prepared gourmet breakfast! This is not a trip I will

We are staying at the … with my 88 year old

Hummingbirds, woodpecker, tit mouse – peace.
My brother and his family were here last week! ..
– Chris & Neil, Worthington, Ohio

A glorious place of peace, contentment and joy. The
food and water taste “better” and the

A true jewel along the path. Long life, honey in the
heart, and thirteen thank yous. We loved our stay!
Thanks so much for your splendid hospitality, your
magnificent place, the bird feeders, the javelinas,
the good reading. We hope to return soon. –
Linda & Jack, Washburn, Wisconsin
We are sooo happy you had room when we called you
at the last minute. This was such a gift to stay here
– the hospitality, the room, the setting –
we certainly could have stayed a very long time. This
was actually what we needed before we join our children
again and resume our “daily” lives. I’m
sure we’ll be back and will definitely recommend
this treasure to others… – Gavin
& Steven, Cedar Falls, Iowa
We’re writing tonight because we’ll move
to the tipi (teepee?) tomorrow and might forget to
find this book before leaving the following morning!
We are very grateful to have found our way to your
home. You have cooked us marvelous meals (chile rellenos,
salsa, beans, pesto, potatoes, berries…!), given
us a very comfy bed and sheltered us in this solar
straw, mountain wayside. Thank you!
Your advice about the Cochise Stronghold Trail access
and the cranes was much appreciated, and your flexibility/
innovation with thermoses, meal-to-go, and ***massages***
was great. The information in the notebooks was helpful
too. On Christmas night we found our way here in the
dark guided by the directions you’d e-mailed
to us in N. Carolina. Next day we hiked leisurely
on the Cochise Trial, misidentified scat/ we deduced
“javelina” you replied “ringtail”!)
and tracks (we decided “fine” then …rejoiced
at experiencing on uninhibited Milky Way from the
ringside seats in the hot tub….…to witness
the sandhill cranes arise at sunrise. Then massages
and a transfer to the tipi…We hope to see you
again! – Sue & Michele, Farnerville,
North Carolina
What a lovely retreat here in the Dragoon Mountains.
The physical beauty is a joy. The strawbale house
is so lovely & fascinating with its control of
temperature. And your meals were so grand –
delicious & plentiful - & the picnic was so
grand when we went to the Chiricahua Mountains. Thanks
for your hospitality - & the comforts. Hope to
return soon. – Janet, Tucson, Arizona
Feb. - Many thanks for sharing a bit of your world
with us. We had a lovely trek up the Cochise Trail
past the divide. A good soaking rain on our way down
couldn’t dampen our spirits since we knew a
hot tub, a mug of tea, and our cozy Agave room awaited
us. Luxury! We love it all and leave refreshed, relaxed
and inspired.. 1” of rain.. we’re glad
for you especially since we’re plant people
too! – Ginny & Wayne, New Richmond,
Wisconsin
This truly is a place where heaven and earth meet.
I enjoyed my stay here and am grateful for the beautiful
(quiet) landscape, food & comforts. I want to
return to conceive my first-born here – it has

Thank you! 3 wonderful days & nights.. beautiful
scenery, nice hikes, blue skies. Great food! We are
so glad to have found you. “A little piece of
HEAVEN!!!” and great stars from a lovely hot
tub! – Jeff & Kimberly, Dayton, Ohio
Thank God for your spot on the internet – that
I could search for that “off the beaten path”
escape and find what my heart desired… I was
delighted to find the basket of bath salts & herbs
that thrilled my senses, then a bright red cardinal
danced outside the window enjoying the bounty at the
bird feeder. After going 2000 mph at work, I slowed
to 1mph to nap, read, write, hike, pray, re-prioritize,
reflect.. Life is good… – Brenda,
Arizona
We will sure be back! Maybe many times! It’s
perfect! You go out of your way to do everything possible
to make people comfortable and spoiled! Great birding
too. One of the best places we’ve ever stayed.
– Emma & Susan, Vashon Island, Washington

then overwhelmed with Peace, Nature and the nicest
society that human kind provides. Thanks! –

with us. We hiked for two days and the views were
wonderful. I love chickens, so it was a special treat
to watch yours go about their business. Mandy was
treated to a quick view of an elegant trogan on our
hike today, so that will go to number one on her bird
list. Couldn’t ask for a better vacation. Next

food. After a long week of wandering about the southwest
we found the jewel – an oasis for rest and relaxation.
Hopefully when we call upon your fantastic courtesy
again you will allow us to share this warmth again.
Much thanks. – Rick & Teri, Placerville,
CA
We enjoyed your lovely home. Our visit was much too
brief. The beauty that surrounds your home is brilliant.
Thanks for the excellent breakfast, the apple crisp
was to die for. Much thanks for your warm welcome,
hopefully our paths will cross again. –
Randy & Karen, North Bend, Washington
This was a wonderful weekend. You made us feel right
at home and very comfortable. This is a beautiful
spot, and so drastically different from any landscape
back east. It’s easy to understand why folks
come here for it’s therapeutic experience. We
wish you many good things and thank you…. the
food was delic.. – Linda & Jim, Koxburg,
Connecticut …service with a smile...one
thing that impressed me was how the two of you designed
the interior of the Agave room. I love the speckled
plaster, and the “every-little-detail”
aspect of the comfort experience you provide. I also
like the real life senior citizen chickens and the
eggs with the green shells. Also I like your decision
to use bromine instead of chlorine to halogenate your
tub. I don’t how you guys do it (I couldn’t
get up that early, cook for people and be nice to
them) but you do it well. Now that we know this place
is here (found it on the web) we’ll be sure
to keep coming back. For the hiking, for the eggs,
for the peace and quiet. – Lisa & Andy,
Tucson, Arizona
Thanks for sharing your peace and solitude. This place
now “knows our name” as well. –
Jon & Lin, Tucson, Arizona
The chickens are at the patio, 2 beautiful gourds

Stronghold B&B. Happy Birthday to me. –

made this the perfect weekend. – Clint,

one rattlesnake, and bat – made excellent companions…
breakfasts great! – Kim & Wendy, San
Francisco, CA
Nov. 03 - Thanks for the wonderful peaceful place
you both made and for opening it to the public the
hospitality was spectacular (GOOD), the scenery awe-inspiring,
and John’s hand craft work is to die for, he
must put his heart in it. The picture frames are the
best I have ever seen, and the food well you know
what everyone said about that so I’ll say nothing,
because you have heard it all before, it’s all
been said. (I wish I could take some cooking lessons
from Nancy!!) This is breathtaking! Wish we could
have stayed longer, but we will back soon maybe after
our wedding. – Christie & Douglas,
Tucson, Arizona
This is to thank you for all that you did for Doug,
the vitamin C’s and hot teas, the lemons, etc.

(totally great!). The food too! It just doesn’t
get any better than this. See you next year! –
Tim & Mary, Albuquerque, New Mexico
Nov. 03 - Thank you for a beautiful experience. The
food and accommodations were wonderful. I am Brigit,
whose great grandmother was of Cochise’s people.
She was with Naiche, son of Cochise, when the Chiricahua
Apache surrendered to U.S. Army. Her name was Morning
Star. My great-grandfather, Angus MacKindee, a Scottish
immigrant to Ontario, Canada, went to the U.S. Southwest
when a young man. He met my Apache great-grandmother
at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. They had twin boys, Wilfred
& Alfred and a girl, Irma. Wilfred was my mother’s
father. I am so happy to have seen this place and
to have walked in its beauty. I ask the Holy People
to bless everyone who respects and honors this place.
– Brigit & Charles, Albuquerque, New
Mexico
December 03 - We just love it here, so beautiful and
the mountains so awesome. Such peace and quiet away
from the normal hustle and bustle of life in our city.
And of course, the bird life is wonderful. And the
hot tub. And your hospitality for “happy hour”.
I could go on & on. Our stay was just fantastic.
– Maureen & Mic, Leicester, England
Here to see the Sandhill Cranes, this place a highlight.
Everyone wants to return. Thank you. – Jo,
Judy, Jean, Rebecca, Phoenix, Prescott & Scottsdale,
Arizona
The magnificent backdrop and setting of the Stronghold,
the variety of birds scurrying around the feeder area.
The comfort and rightness of the strawbale house that
we felt a home in almost at once. The food and care,

for two wonderful days/nights. – Ed &
Deborah, Torrey Utah/ Green Valley, Arizona

– EE, NYC
December 03 - Many thanks for a wonderful stay! We
came from London (U.K.) for the rock-climbing which
has certainly lived up to expectation – “The
Wasteland” in particular was mind blowing. Staying
in such a lovely house that really feels like home-away-from-home
has made our visit to Cochise something to treasure
in our memories for a long time. The whole feel of
the place is so special, so many nice things, great
breakfast, beautiful house, the birds, the hot tub.
Hope to come back someday. – Andrew, Paul,
Oliver, Seb, London, United Kingdom
Dec 03 - Thank you for creating such a wonderful retreat
for others to share! Here I was able to experience
my first B&B, my first massage, even my first
cardinal. You both do such a fabulous job making sure
that no detail is overlooked! Thank you again for
providing a setting in which people can relax &
reflect on things most dear to them. –
Thomas & Katie, Albuquerque, New Mexico
Dec.03 - What a very special Christmas we’ve
had here! Members of our family came to gather to
celebrate and to meet up with those on the road. Jasper
(10 mo) had an incredible first visit to Arizona and
Olly, almost three will surely never forget our night
in your tepee! And Santa found them way out here!!
The tepee was truly a remarkable and rare experience
for us all. As we build family traditions we count
this as a highlight so far. Be well. You and this
blessed place will be remembered. – Amy,
Ethan, Olly, Jasper, Boston, MA |
