Oh, what a gift of peace,
quiet and serenity. The mountains, the rocks, the
birds, the sweet smell of pine – it all brings
joy & healing to my heart. Thank you for 2 days
and nights to enjoy what is. Love,
– Fiona, New York City
(Child’s handwriting) - Thank you for the tree
spirits and the rock families I played with. I love
all the art here and I liked the cat. I also enjoyed
your company. Love,
– Mikki (6 year old daughter of Fiona), New
York City
It was pure delightful, spiritual magic! Love
– Allegra, Dragoon, Arizona
This was our first bed & breakfast experience.
We’re afraid we’ve been spoiled and no
other retreat will be quite as wonderful as this.
Thanks so much!
“He sendeth the springs in the valleys, which
run among the hills. They give drink to every beast
of field… By them shall the fowls of the heaven
have their habitation, which sing among the branches...
O LORD, how manifold are thy works! In wisdom hast
thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches”
Psalm 103:10,11,12,24
– John & Maria, Elfrida, Arizona
In his book, “The Sacred Earth”, Courtney
Milne might easily have included this very special
place where we have enjoyed a delightful week hiking,
watching the birds, learning about the geography and
history of the area, resting and reflecting, experiencing
the needed rain/snow, appreciating John and Nancy’s
warm welcome and excellent cuisine. The memories of
our very pleasant stay in the Agave Room are thanks
to the hardwork, care and fine stewardship put into
this lovely piece of Cochise’s Stronghold, Thank
you…
– Bill & Lucie, Toronto, Canada
August 04 - This has been so great and relaxing! This
was Dick’s first B&B and his idea to come.
..The scenery is fabulous, now matter where you look.
It’s so quiet and dark at night. Saw some wildlife
but I’m glad I missed seeing the bats…
John was a great host and cook. Thanks for everything
& we hope to come back again! We will pass the
word on about this place.
– Suzanne & Dick, Camp Verde, Arizona
July 04 -Thank you for a wonderful, peaceful stay.
It was so nice to get out of the city and to de-stress.
The food and the accommodations were more than we
expected-everything was wonderful – we’ll
be back soon!
– Rhonda & Leon, Cave Creek, Arizona
Another brilliant blue morning on the patio enjoying
the birds fluttering all around us & thoughts
turn to our trip home back East (where its rainy &
gray). We’ll take with us our memories of this
unique place. Our favorite hike in this week long
trek across SE AZ was right in your backyard. The
secluded setting, beautiful food, Dan’s 50th
birthday meal, the massages made this vacation memorable.
The other beautiful part came from the intangibles-
the serenity watching the turkey vultures glide (including
the one who flew right over our heads on the Cochise
trail), the appreciation for the Native Americans’
who lived here with their families, our conversations
with you. I’m glad we were able to tack on an
extra day here. One more day to absorb a little of
the essence of another plant, bird, & rock. Thank
you.
– Kaethe & Dane, Binghamton, NY
Thank you very much for great hospitality in your
unique bed & breakfast. What a wonderful base
for rock climbing, hiking, strolling around, sitting
in the hot tub, watching the birds, hummingbirds and
mule deer, learning about nature and history. We enjoyed
the opulent breakfast and the wonderful tasty dinner.
One week went by too fast, but the remembrance of
this week will stay for ever.
– Irene & Peter, Germany
We had a wonderful two days here and wish we could
stay longer. The salmon dinner was excellent –
the best food we had in two weeks. It is so beautiful
and peaceful here. Yesterday we drove to the Amerind
Institute in Dragoon. We were treated to a spectacular
thunder and lightening show as we were driving. The
institute is in a lovely complex in a lonely setting
and the Indian exhibits are superb. We highly recommend
it. We also enjoyed the black cat. The hike up the
Cochise Trail was fun. We took a picnic with us and
had lunch by the spring on the way back down. Watching
the birds was so interesting, we saw northern cardinals,
rufous sided towhee, acorn woodpeckers, Mexican jays,
lots of little sparrow like birds and perhaps an elegant
trogan.
– Dwight & Jane, Northridge, CA
A wonderful adventure! Beautiful surroundings, good
friends, lots of laughter.
– Michael & Jane, CA
Another sister-time in your tranquil place…
What more could we ask for, after (a salmon dinner
on our private patio, stars to touch overhead drawing
us toward the secluded hot tub with the moon casting
“lighted” shadows as we caught up with
abundant chatter, great & restful sleep &
tremendous breakfast after our mile hike, except we
wish we had more time .
– Mary & Arlene, Tonto Verde, Arizona
This has been a marvelous experience. I really enjoy
the atmosphere – trees, birds, stone figures,
etc. I learned a lot about medicinal plants and thanks
for the tincture. May your endeavor continue many
more years.
– Claudine, Yuma, AZ & Moses Lake, WA
Tranquility, Peacefulness, Hospitality Supreme, Gorgeous
trails, Rocks, Birds, Plants
iGracias!
– Rebecca & Richard, Rebecca & Richard,
Silver City, New Mexico
Just what I needed to take away all the worries that
life brings you. Tranquility, beauty, birds, etc.
to relax a person. Everyone should experience this
beautiful place. I must come back for a longer stay
– and the Reiki was wonderful.
– Doris
It’s great to cross paths with those who know
that doing it right is its own reward. Thanks for
helping sustain us all…Peace
– Brent, Diana & Garrison, Ithaca, NY
This would be my second time here and it is more beautiful
then the last time I came. Very wonderful climbing
areas, I’ve climbed up and down a large rock
off the side of a hill several times now and its very
inspiring! The view from there is breathtaking. I
will be coming here for years to come. Thank you so
much for your hospitality. This is one of the greatest
places in the world.
– Tom, Scottsdale, Arizona
Our “kids” found this beautiful spot,
last year through internet and said we had to come,
so Steve set it up – He was so right- beautiful,
scenic, the birds, deer, so happy we came…
– Steve, Susan, Tom, Elden, Jim & Max, Minneapolis,
MN
Thanks you for a refreshing escape! We’ll be
back. Outstanding food… what a treat and atmosphere…
your “hole in the wall hide-out” is a
great secret but we’ll share it with all! Looking
forward to seeing you more now that we are Cochise
neighbors.
– Beverly, Cochise AZ & Richland, Oregon
Thanks so much for sharing the Stronghold with us
– heavenly! We feel so lucky to have found you.
Your hospitality is perfection. Our regards to the
cat. An ideal place to study primes of the form x2
+ 5y2
– Royce & Martha, Grinnell, Iowa
Really enjoyed our second visit ..nothing has changed
except the views that change with every footstep and
movement of the sun. Absolutely beautiful. We will
be back.
– Dick & Peggy, Sugar Grove, Ohio
Thanks for having our big crew, so many good things
here, it’s hard to remember them all: the brilliant
stars and rare telescopic views, the beautiful hiking
trails, the spa, the exhilarating open shower under
a nearby tree, the peaceful days and night-time wildlife
sounds, the welcoming hosts, and, of course, breakfast.
Thanks – we hope to return soon!
– Russ, Kellie, Ben Bryan, Jolie, Tempe, Arizona
Thank you for your kind hospitality and wonderful
cooking. Your have created a beautiful place here
– unparalleled scenic serenity. We enjoyed our
hike to the west stronghold trailhead, although we
struggled to find your property from the horse trail.
Bisbee is so vibrant and well preserved and made for
a great day trip. Thanks for recommending Café
Roka – we loved it. Also thanks for providing
a copy of “Once They Moved Like the Wind”
by David Roberts – a fascinating account of
Apache history and lore that truly read like the wind.
We will miss the myriad of stars atop silhouetted
mountains; distant lavender peaks across the dusky
desert; the murmurings of the sweet mountain winds;
and of course, the wonderful breakfasts served in
this incredible room by such friendly and knowledgeable
hosts. All the best!
– Patrick & Kim, St. Louis, MO
March | What a beautiful place! Even in the snow…
a very peaceful, refreshing place….
– Dale & Vicki, Rochester, Minnesota
I brought 2 – 10 year olds and a 7 year old
and had a great relaxing time. Saw, 3 deer before
breakfast and beautiful birds.
– Jay, Santa Fe, New Mexico
What a nice place for an anniversary getaway. We had
a great time. Breakfast was wonderful… massage
was extra tremendous.. Nice talking to both of you
guys!! Keep up the good work on your place.
– Bill & Lenie, Tucson, Arizona
What a marvelously peaceful place to relax and recharge.
– Joel & Ingrid, Flagstaff, AZ
We had such a grand time and already are making plans
for a return visit. Each breakfast was unique and
superb. What a treat! The birds were an unexpected
bonus, such a wide variety. My camera got a good work
out…
– Walt & Gail, Hovland, Minnesota
May | Loved the house, the design, sustainability,
comfort, beautiful quiet area. The quantity of birds
were a treat. Saw a mariposa lily this morning on
our walk. Very pleasantly surprised by the wide variety
of flowers that were blooming along the road and in
the fields. The food was delicious and plentiful.
I could come back and will recommend you to my friends.
– Patricia, Tucson, Arizona
The gold, orange and blue birds charmed us. An evening
half-bottle of Pinot Noir enjoyed on top of a massive
rock which afforded us a magnificent view of the canyon
enchanted us. The grandeur of the location is bittersweet
remembering Cochise’s time here. ..
– Sandra & Philip, Tucson & Victoria,
British Columbia, Canada
May - We saw petroglyphs, flower & fruits on cactus,
coral bells, birds that wanted to converse with us,
century plants, waxy yucca flowers blooming everywhere…
this is a gift to be here from my friends because
I am now 50. I feel great. Beautiful & happy &
strong.
– Ellen, Eugene, Oregon
Wedding At Cochise Stronghold B&B
There could not have been another site more beautiful
and appropriate for our nuptials and celebration.
Thank you… outstanding hospitality and incredible
breakfasts! You have created the perfect sanctuary
and we are so happy and grateful to have had the opportunity
to share this with our families and friends. All the
best to you all.
– Cathy & Steve, Tucson, Arizona
Day after Cat & Steve’ wedding! This is
a wonderland & the best setting for such a communion
of families & friends. Thank you to the Yates
for making this a wonderful experience!
– Debora, Tucson, AZ
The rock faces lime green at sunset. And trees stand
green and close, protected circle of beauty and life.
– K.B.

the perfect getaway. A place to be enjoyed again &
again.
– Joe & Phylllis, David & Calvert, Michael

Our delightful stay was so memorable! Five different
species of birds at the feeders to join us for your
deliciously prepared breakfast was such a treat. The
attention to detail in our accommodations was superb.
– Mrty & Helona, Denville, New Jersey
A beautiful restful weekend – even the weather
added to our stay – quiet rain. We loved watching
the birds – so many species just outside our
window! Such tasty breakfast, a great way to start
the day. The views are spectacular, we never tire
of them. The accommodations are so comfy and cozy!
We’ll see you again I’m sure – we
love it here – its so special. This is my 71st
birthday weekend. It has been so special!
– Ruthie & Dave, Tubac, Arizona
Nancy, thanks so much for your warm hospitality. We
enjoyed very much the beautiful room, and especially
the scenery! Wonderful place to birdwatch! We even
had the pleasure of watching two deer during the storm
last night.
– Linda & Bill, Vallejo, CA

into ours and your other guests’ lives. Your
gracious hospitality was appreciated by us and our

in the Stronghold. Best wishes, as we all continue
on our journey.

– Barry & Kathy, Tucson/ San Francisco
What a find! We were mesmerized by the birds, enchanted
by the lovely B&B, spellbound by the stars from
our vantage point in the hot tub and very happy to
be walking in an area where Cochise and the Chirachua
Apaches once lived. Clearly, this is ap place to return
to and to tell all our family and friends about.
– Leslie & Bharathon, Tuscson, Arizona
Only a one night stay, but what a treat! A truly beautiful
and humbling place, we will treasure the memory. Thank
you Nancy & John

Tipi night, sunshine day, warm hospitality, neat place,
well loved. Thank you for tending this part of our
earth. My best to all teachers.
– Banos, Anchorage, Alaska
We are so pleased to have found your B&B! Our
stay, though too short was romantic, peaceful and
rejuvenating. We can’t wait to visit again.
You have such a special place here, and it is so generous
of you to share it as you do. Your karmic bank accounts
are undoubtedly overflowing!
– Brent & Kristin, Scottsdale, Arizona
What a wonderful place you have created here. I hope
to emulate it some day, with straw bales, plaster,
radiant floor heating, integral color concrete floors,
solar water heater, and on and on and on…. We
really enjoyed our three nights here and we hope to
return soon. I think that we saw an elegant trogon
on our first morning here. We hope to see it again.
Thank your for sharing the Yates Yurts, also wonderful
spaces… good luck with your business. Thanks
for sharing your life with us “city folk”.
– Debbie & Joe, Scottsdale, Arizona

Child’s handwriting: I wish I could stay here
year round. It is so peaceful. I was worried what
house we would stay in and what it would look like.
But I don’t have to worry, because this place
is better than any hotel. Katie
What a paradise – our only mistake was making
reservations for only one night. Thank you for sharing…
– Laura & Clark, Texas
A wonderful place, very special massage, lovely company.
– Kathy & Ted, Tucson, Arizona
Thank you so much for your hospitality and for sharing
your “little slice of heaven”!
– H’s, Gilbert, Arizona
Thank you… We have never seen so many birds
– the orioles sipping nectar just outside the
window and that woodpecker - what a character! You
have an enchanted spot.
– Scott & Sharon, Stevens Point, Wisconsin/
Tucson, AZ
What a beautiful place, Cochise had good taste. You
are great hosts, food was wonderful. We’ll be
back.
– Kitty & Ray, Bellingham, WA
Lots of rocks – Cochise Fm. Granite stock 28-70
million yrs (books don’t agree!) with odd amphibolite
9grey-black) on top, quite strange, amphibolite is
older! Sedimentary rocks to N& S, softer, wooded
peaks. Big fault in canyon near overlook Halfmoon
tank, sedimentary/ granite contact. Rocks tell story,
we often don’t know the language – what
really happened here?
– Warren & Wendy, Madison, WI
It was so important & great to be able to escape
NYC to such tranquility. Thank you for making it possible!
– Zoe & Ethan, New York City
Thank you for your generosity and open hearts. Blessings
– Susan
We came here to “get away from it all”
but in so doing found so much to do, climbing both
sides of the valley and all around. We asked you where
the nearest church is but this is truly the sacred
ground. We came out to the desert expecting desolation,
dryness, and death, but on the contrary we found abundance,
excitement, and life! The clear stars, the pure silence,
and the grandeurs of the mountains all contributed
to an over-flowing river of peace. So, as dry as it
is out here, one can still come and be completely
rejuvenated. We thank you for this opportunity and
we hope that we will return, but in the meantime,
know that we will never forget this glimpse of heaven!
Peace.
– Ed, Eileen and Chris, Marshfield, Wisconsin
Oh no! …WA rain? We had escaped rainy Seattle
and were looking forward to warm and sunny AZ (our
first visit). nstead we enjoyed the hot tub in the
rain. However, next day was a whole lot better &
we loved our days hike in the Chiricahuas. Then on
to Willcox over that amazing plain. No sign of the
Sandhill Cranes, unfortunately. Our stay here has
been wonderful… so much nicer than we could
ever imagined, the peace, the beauty the comfortable
accommodations (with so much good lighting for reading!)
& the great breakfasts, not to mention John &
Nancy who were such gracious hosts. Our final day,
BEAUTIFUL SUNSHINE what else could we want! Thank
you
– Adam & Hazel, Seattle, WA
We are blessed in having been guided to you. Thank
you for holding strong in creating this mountain oasis.
Your commitment to earth and spirit invites healing
for those that come to your door. A hot tub under
a blanket of clouds, the warmth of a fire in the rain,
Rockfellow Dome encircled in morning mist, and meditating
with you, all have renewed our spirits for a New Year.
In being a friend to man, you are blessed. Til we
meet again. Peace.
– Jaswand & Satwand, Phoenix, Arizona
It is such a joy to be in a place that has been created
with so much sensitivity to Mother Earth and all of
her creatures past & present. Everything was perfect
the fresh herbs & butter on the potatoes, the
apple crisp and the sandhill cranes disappearing into
the morning clouds – black wingtips the last
thing to fade from sight. I will be back with my yoga
group. Namaste
– Mark & Ellen, Tucson, Arizona
Wonderful accommodations, extremely comfortable bed,
beautiful surroundings, delicious breakfast, friendly
service. Sad to only spend one night! This is such
a great place to sink your teeth into history (and
then retreat to the comforts of modernity). Hiking
the Cochise Trail I could imagine all the events I’ve
read about. This is a fantastic place. I hope next
time I come I have the time to hike in to see Council
Rocks in the West Stronghold.
– John & Julie, Pasadena, CA
Kristina and I had a great time (as always). You guys
play a tough game of rummy! We’re ready to challenge
you again ---Looking forward to seeing you again,
soon
